Care Guide

Preserving Beauty Through Time

Every piece of jewelry from McCormack Design Studio is handcrafted with care, intention, and attention to detail, designed to accompany you through life's journey. Like any treasured possession, your jewelry will benefit from occasional care to help preserve its beauty for years to come.

Natural metals and gemstones evolve over time, developing character through wear and interaction with the world around them. Whether you choose to maintain the bright luster of polished silver or embrace the rich warmth of a natural patina, your jewelry will continue to tell a story uniquely its own.

By taking a few moments to clean, store, and wear your jewelry properly, you help protect its craftsmanship while allowing it to age gracefully. With thoughtful care, each piece can become a cherished companion, growing richer in character, beauty, and meaning with every passing year—a reflection of the memories, experiences, and moments that make your journey uniquely yours.

Wear it often. Care for it gently. Let it age beautifully.

Patina

One of the unique qualities of sterling silver, copper, brass, and other natural metals is that they develop a patina over time. Patina is a natural surface change that occurs as metal interacts with the environment, creating deeper tones and subtle variations in color.

For many jewelry lovers, patina is part of the beauty and character of a handcrafted piece. It tells the story of your journey, reflecting the moments, experiences, and energy shared between you and the jewelry you wear.

Some people love the rich, antique appearance that develops naturally, while others prefer the bright shine of freshly polished metal. Both are beautiful—it simply comes down to personal preference.

Why Does Patina Occur

Patina is a natural process caused by exposure to:

  • Air and moisture

  • Skin chemistry

  • Lotions, perfumes, and cosmetics

  • Environmental conditions

  • Everyday wear

This process is completely normal and does not indicate damage or poor quality. In fact, it is one of the characteristics that makes precious metals so timeless and unique.

Simple Cleaning at Home

For routine cleaning, you can safely restore the brightness of your jewelry using a gentle method:

What You'll Need:

  • Warm water

  • A small drop of Dawn® dish soap

  • A soft toothbrush

  • A lint-free cloth

Instructions:

  • Fill a small bowl with warm water.

  • Add a drop of Dawn dish soap and mix gently.

  • Soak your jewelry for a few minutes.

  • Using a soft toothbrush, gently clean around stones, textures, and details.

  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  • Pat dry and polish gently with a soft cloth.

This method is safe for most metal jewelry and helps remove oils, dirt, and everyday buildup.

Caring For Gemstones

Many gemstones can be safely cleaned using the method above, but some stones are softer or more porous than others. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and abrasive cleaners unless you know they are safe for your specific gemstone.

When in doubt, gentle soap and water is often the best choice.
